Word of mouth is the only system that works
Neighbors trust neighbors. But "who did right by you" lives in group threads and fading memories — with no record, no check, and no reward for the consistent good ones.
Word of mouth is the only referral system a neighborhood actually trusts — and it's broken. Hometown List is that list, put online: real names, real vouches, real license checks. And nobody can ever pay their way above you.

Joe was prompt, fair, and fixed the problem right the first time. He's the only person I call now.
The trust a neighborhood has in word of mouth is real. What's broken is everything around it.
Neighbors trust neighbors. But "who did right by you" lives in group threads and fading memories — with no record, no check, and no reward for the consistent good ones.
One charges small businesses $90–700/mo just to be findable and message customers. Another sells the same lead to 3–5 contractors at once. You pay to play — or you don't show up.
There's no one holding anyone accountable for a bad job — and no one rewarding the ones who do it right. The public can't police it either, because nothing's written down.
Asks are public to the area and alerted to matching verified businesses — visibility for the community, response rights for the vetted. Watch it run.
Zip + trade only — never a full address. "Electrician, must be insured, 85142."
Matching pros in the area get the ask — response rights for the vetted.
Anyone can see responses and vouch for who answered; the job gets done.
Verified neighbors vouch for who actually did right by them. No bots, no paid vouches.
Recommendation score moves, the quality floor re-checks — and the list stays honest.
Fake claims die fast in a hyperlocal market. Here's what sits behind every badge, and who's watching whom.
Every business's ROC record is checked at onboarding and re-swept monthly: ACTIVE status, bond, and insurance on file. "Verified" means exactly what was checked, with a drill-down proof anyone can view. License-exempt trades (sub-$1,000 work, hauling, cleaning — legal under AZ law) are listed on the community-vouch track with a clear "not licensed" disclosure, never hidden.
We started with a wedge in Johnson Ranch / Schnepf Rd. Then the neighborhood did the pitch for us.
A local business owner started a "who do you recommend" group — 50 neighbors in 3 days, with ~14 local businesses already inside (pool, pet care, pest, hauling, handyman, landscape, daycare). She's a founding-partner candidate. That's a quarter of our Phase 1 homeowner target, and most of the business target, in one room.
San Tan Valley referral group · Aug 2026Neighbors are posting "call this guy, fair and honest" with phone numbers — a Hometown List profile that doesn't exist yet. The behavior we're automating is already the neighborhood's default. We're just writing it down, checking the licenses, and making it fair.
Threads in the launch area · Aug 2026In the launch area right now: an electrician, "must be insured" · a water heater (23 reactions) · shower glass · bathroom remodel. Nobody routed them to a verified pro — the first connections are waiting to happen.
Group threads · Aug 2026Small businesses in the area report paying $90/mo, $150 + $300/mo, $417/mo, and $132 for zero leads — and leaving the platforms. They're paying to be findable, not to be good. Hometown List flips that: good is the listing.
Owner quotes · Nextdoor + group posts · Aug 2026No more paying to be findable, no more being sold to three competitors at once. Your reputation does the marketing — we just keep it honest.
Founding members get a verified presence for life, grandfathered when paid tiers arrive. Everyone after gets a free trial or an early-bird discount at launch. Ten spots. When they're gone, they're gone — and money can't buy one.
ROC record checked at onboarding + re-swept monthly: ACTIVE status, bond, insurance on file. License-exempt trades get the community-vouch track with a clear "not licensed" disclosure.
Price is set by interviews with local businesses — candidate range $15–50/mo, open-ended until we ask. Founding members never pay it.
That's the whole engine. No full address, no spam — just your zip and your honest word, carrying real weight.
Every honest vouch you leave makes the whole list more trustworthy — and every bad operator you flag gets reviewed by the community and by AI. The neighborhood polices itself, and AI polices the police. Your privacy is built in: zip only, never an address.
AI triages every report first and auto-resolves the clear-cut cases. What AI can't decide — retaliation claims, fake-review disputes, quality-floor edge calls — goes to neighbor moderators, Nextdoor-style, for your service area. And every moderator action is AI-reviewed, so the system stays fair for everyone, moderators included.
Yes — for the first 10 founding members, free verified presence for life, grandfathered when paid tiers arrive. Everyone after gets a free trial or early-bird discount at launch. The paid tier (verified badge, request alerts, analytics) is priced by interviews with local businesses — candidate range $15–50/mo, kept open-ended until we ask.
Vouches come from verified neighbors under real names only. No self-vouching, no paid vouches, no friends-and-family stacking. AI triages every report, community moderators adjudicate disputes, and every moderator action is AI-reviewed. The score caps and 24-month decay mean no single campaign can move the needle.
The quality floor only kicks in after 10 ratings, and it's ≥70% positive — one bad job doesn't sink anyone. Suspension comes with a recovery ladder: at-risk flag, 30-day grace, then suspension from lead flow with the profile still live, then recovery via fresh vouches. Billing pauses while suspended. Removal is appealable, and a failed appeal is final.
No. Paid boosts are impossible by design — there is no mechanism, at any price. The only "ads" ever are clearly-labeled sponsored posts for non-trade businesses (realtors, salons, restaurants), never inside the vouched flow, never a paid rank.
No. Neighbors ask with zip + trade only — never a full address. Businesses show their service area, not a street address unless they choose to.
Service area by service area, zip by zip — a new area only opens when the last one holds its numbers. 40–60 businesses per service area by design: scarcity is what keeps the list quality high.
One link, one conversation, one specific next step. Whether you're a business claiming one of the five founding spots, a neighbor posting their first ask, or a moderator keeping the area honest — the list only works if your neighbors are on it.
